Today I left work a couple of hours early. I was caught up, so I decided to hit the local casino. I haven't been out to play poker in awhile, mainly due to studying for the GMAT. I got there and was seated immediately, becoming the 9th player at the 10 handed table. We were playing $1/2 NLHE. A little backstory...A former co-worker was there, and he typically plays well. I respect his game, and chose the seat 2 spots to his left, rather than the seat immediately to his right, in order to have position on him. I feel this is important due to what happened.
My first orbit was uneventful. In the 2nd orbit, with approx starting stack of $200, around the 12th hand I was UTG and see AA. I raised to $12. The player to my immediate left raised to $25. There were 2 callers, and I 4-bet to $75. Guy on my left 5-bet shoves! The next 2 fold, and I snap-called and rolled my hand. Everyone is speculating AA vs KK when a K flops!! He claims he doesn't have KK. The turn and river are blanks and he shows QQ and mucks it. I double up + and he is left with $7. Interestingly enough, he triples up next hand, makes a few timely shoves, and runs it up to $150. After the double-up, I couldn't hit a flop. My stack dwindled for about 45 minutes. I get A-10 in the SB and raise to $12. He calls, along with 3 others. The flop is A-8-3. I lead out for $25, and the guy on my left is the only caller. The turn is a 10. There are 2 clubs now on the board, but nothing that's really scary. I check, hoping to feign weakness. He bets $45, and I call. The river is a non-club 6. I bet $50, he shoves, I call, and he shows A-3. I felt him, and he leaves. I stick around another orbit, don't win another hand, and leave +$186. Not bad for an hour and 20 minutes, and 2 hands won, both against the same opponent!
Tomorrow my wife and I are headed to Wrigley Field to see the Cubs play. It is a gift for my birthday. We're taking the train from Bloomington to Union Station and back. $42 round trip for both of us to ride the train is cheaper than parking in Chicago, let alone saving the frustration of driving in Chicago. The Cubs are playing the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Dbacks starting pitcher tomorrow is 0-1 with a 18.90 ERA....I'm hoping for good weather and the wind blowing out, as we're sitting in the bleachers. Let's hope for a W for the Cubbies!!
