I was laid off on Wednesday, February 4th, due to lack of work. It wasn't a huge surprise, as I had been having to find things to do and ask for extra work to keep me busy for awhile. When I was hired on in May of 2014, I was hired to do the work of a lady who was going on maternity leave. I specifically inquired as to whether there would be sufficient work to keep me busy when she was back, and I was assured it wouldn't be a problem. Apparently, it was. I am now actively searching for a new job. I am technically paid through the end of February, and then I can collect unemployment if I haven't found a job by then. I can go back to work at Coca-Cola part-time if necessary, although I'm hoping that's more of a last resort and not something that becomes necessary.
I have had 1 interview so far, and have 1 scheduled for this Wednesday, both for accounting positions. Hopefully I can find something in the accounting field and continue to use my degree. I also intend to study for the GMAT exam, and look into enrolling for courses toward my Master's Degree, likely an MBA, hopefully at Bradley University in Peoria. Part-time would take 2 years to complete.
This is a new experience for me, having never before been unemployed. I have a decent amount of savings which I can use to pay bills until I get a job, but hopefully it won't take too long. If I can find something relatively soon, I'm going to try to squeeze in a quick trip to Las Vegas before starting the new job.
Of course, if I could find the right job, one that paid well enough, I'd even consider moving....anyone know of a good paying accounting position in Las Vegas? lol

WHAT UP!!!! IT IS THE COKE BOY!!!! watch out 4 the glass pipes
ReplyDeleteUm, in case you couldn't tell by my reference to my previous employer, my screen name here is not in reference to the drug, but the company which I used to work for...lol
DeleteOH i know. it is coke cola BUT the Trooper uses that intro and he is grinding in Vegas ,which is something u seem to want to do and he (Trooper) found glass pipes outside his apt
DeleteNo, I know I'm not good enough to be a grinder. But I would love to have a good job in the Las Vegas area and be able to play on the side, given all the tourists that play there. Lots of places to play, and it likely wouldn't be hard to get friends to visit. Lol
Deletec now u r thinking smart,sir. think as poker as a 2nd p/t job
Deleteplus no state income tax too
DeleteSorry to hear that Coke. Good luck in the job search...
ReplyDeleteThanks! Just trying not to get frustrated, as it's a rather difficult process. If I can get some interviews I'm hoping to land a job offer, it seems that getting the interviews is the hard part as usual.
DeleteReal sorry to hear this Nick. I've been there many times and it sucks. I think tho in your field and your age (young, at least compared so some of us), you should be able to find something fairly quickly.
ReplyDeleteThe casinos are always looking for good accountants, I suggest you move to Vegas and search there. Seriously tho, you can search for a Vegas job from where you are. You might have to schedule a trip to Vegas for an interview. Oh, the horror of that!......
Thanks Rob. Honestly, I'm thinking about looking at what's available out there, it's just a matter of finding the best place to look. Online job sites, individual websites, newspapers? If you hear of something please let me know, at this point I'm ready and willing to move, if I can make the numbers work!
DeleteI did hear back from the company I interviewed with last week, and didn't get the position. To be honest, after the interview I felt the person they wanted was someone with more experience than I had, able to step in and to the work right away with no training. While I have the education, I lack enough real world experience to step into a position and just take over right away.
ReplyDeleteLuckily, the interview this week is more of an entry-level position that I feel I'm ready for, and one of my former college classmates works there already. Also, I know someone who works in a different department there, and he put in a good work for me with the person interviewing me, so that should help as well.
Nick, best of luck. I'm sure it's stressful. But, perhaps also a bit exciting. I'm sure you'll find some opportunities. Hope you find something great! TRT
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm hoping it doesn't last long and ends up being similar to a short vacation. I'm hoping to have a better idea after my interview Wednesday.
DeleteGood luck Nick! I wish I had leads for you, man.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Not a lot out there at the moment, especially since I have very little experience to go on. Hoping I don't have to wait long before getting back into the working world.
