Catching up

It's been a few weeks since I've posted, nearly a month actually....mainly because there hasn't been a lot to write about lately.  Since posting, I don't think I've played a hand of poker for real money, for a variety of reasons.  I've played some play money games on pokerstars, but it's not the same.

So, what HAVE I been up to you ask?  Well, let me tell you.

I've been working.  I know, that's normal, and applies to most people, but considering that I just started the job in March, I figured I'd give an update on how it's going.  I really love this job!  The job itself is the closest to what I studied in school (accounting) so far, which helps to make it enjoyable.  I work in the payroll department of a large area hospital.  The people I work with are another reason that the job is going well.  We all get along and the experienced people are great about helping us new employees with learning all aspects of the job.  My supervisor is great and really knows how to get the most out of us, and is friendly while also knowing when to push and be strict when necessary.  I have heard more compliments in this short time than I can remember in al of my previous jobs put together.  He's also great about listening to any problems we may have, work related or not, and it's very close to feeling like a family environment.  There's only one person younger than me in my department, and other than my supervisor, the rest of my department is women.  They are all great people to work with however, so it doesn't make any difference to me.  I've also been getting to know the people in the accounting department, as that's my next goal.  As of October, I'll be eligible to apply for any openings (they require you to be in a department for 6 months before moving), and it would definitely be an increase in pay.  My supervisor knows I'm looking to move up, and has mentioned on numerous occasions that he won't hold me back when it comes to that point, which is also nice to know.  I know not all supervisors are willing to help their employees leave them/

I've been out shooting a couple of times.  I really enjoy target shooting with my AR-15, 9mm Glock, and I recently got out a .357 revolver to shoot for the first time.  I've shot one before, but not since I was a kid, and there is just as much kick as I remember, if not more!  I also have a little .25 caliber peashooter.  Unopened 2liter bottles, bowling pins, and tannerite have made for some great targets with great reactions after a solid hit.

I've done some fishing.  Unfortunately, being in central IL and not having a boat limits my options.  Bank fishing is not optimal, but usually works for me.  I'm just looking to relax and catch some bluegill, crappie, and maybe some bass.  I've caught a fair share of fish, but mostly small bluegill so far.  The weather hasn't been the best, with lots of rain and storms on the few days I've been able to go out for the most part, so if I could get some better weather I think I'd have a little more success.  I need to catch more fish so I can practice filleting them, as that is an area I definitely need more practice in.  I have the basic routine down, I'm just slow....I know with practice I'll get better.  I've mainly taught myself with videos from youtube!

Lastly, I had to tackle a bit of a home maintenance issue on my own for the first time.  I wasn't really on my own, but it's the first time I haven't had my dad around for help.  Luckily, a friend stepped up and offered assistance.  He helped me find the source of a water leak.  Once the source was found, I took it upon myself to try to fix it before he was to come help.  I removed the shower faucet, where the leak appeared to be originating.  I added pipe tape to each end of the connecting "pipe nipple" as it's called, put it back together and tightened it all, and sure enough the leak was gone!  I know it doesn't sound like much, but considering that I have little if any handyman skills, it was a moment of excitement for me!  I can't help but think that my dad is proud, not to mention shocked, at what I accomplished.  lol

I have a quick weekend in Vegas booked in August and a week in The Bahamas booked at the end of September with my wife, so at least I have a couple of vacations to look forward to soon.  We went to the Bahamas for our honeymoon, and we're staying at the same all-inclusive resort, so we are excited to return for some sun, surf, and relaxation!

Until next time....
